Otoplasty

Otoplasty, also known as ear pinning, can help to reshape ears that protrude, are disproportionate, or oddly shaped. It is commonly performed on children since the cartilage of the ear is most easily sculpted between the ages of four and fourteen. Adults however, are also candidates for otoplasty, and Dr. Campbell actually performs otoplasty more commonly on adults than children in his practice.

Otoplasty is a great surgical procedure because it can be performed in order to reduce the overall size of the ears, set prominent ears back, improve the appearance of ears that are missing the curve or outer rim, and overall create a more natural appearing ear that has harmony with the rest of the face. Essentially, otoplasty takes an ear that is noticeable and creates an ear that blends in and does not draw attention to itself.

For adults and older children, otoplasty can be performed under local anesthesia in the office, which means that the patient can go home right after the procedure. For younger children, it is performed in the operating room under general anesthesia. The recovery time after otoplasty is relatively short. Bandages from the surgery can be removed the day after surgery. A tennis type headband is then worn over the upper ears while sleeping, and sutures are removed after about a week. Patients can go back to non-strenuous activities immediately, and can then increase their activities after 1-2 weeks. Any activities that could result in trauma to the ear should be avoided for at least a month.

Otoplasty is not only a relatively simple procedure but also life changing to those who have suffered from self-confidence issues.
