Is it possible that Botox will paralyze the wrong muscle and affect the face incorrectly?

Question: Is it possible that Botox will paralyze the wrong muscle and affect the face incorrectly?

Answer: Yes, it is definitely possible that Botox injections can affect the wrong muscle and relax this muscle creating a side effect or a complication of the injection.  It is obviously imperative that you see an injector with a vast amount of experience using Botox so that this complication does not result as it really should not in experienced hands.

Would you agree that it is early to start having Botox injections at a younger age to use it as a preventative method of treatment?

Question: Would you agree that it is early to start having Botox injections at a younger age to use it as a preventative method of treatment?

Answer: I think Botox is an excellent option to prevent the appearance of wrinkles as it will relax muscles that inevitably create these lines that are part of the aging process.  By starting Botox at an early time period, we can prevent these lines from ever forming and as long as the patient keeps up with the Botox treatments, they will maintain this youthful appearance.

Is Botox ever used to plump the lips?

Question: Is Botox ever used to plump the lips?

Answer: Overall, Botox is seldom used to plump lips but theoretically treatment of the upper lip muscles with Botox can create a slight eversion of the lip which would get the illusion of creating more lip show or plumping the lip; however, this is only occasionally effective in patients and for the most part fillers are used to plump the lips as fillers add volume to the lip and can create a more luscious lip whereas Botox simply relaxes muscle and though it can be mildly effective for upper lip lines, many patients do not like the relaxation of the muscle since it can affect their ability to drink out of a straw, bottle, or even a cup.

I’ve had a hard time finding out how long the results of Dysport last. How long can I expect injections to last?

Question: I’ve had a hard time finding out how long the results of Dysport last. How long can I expect injections to last?

Answer: Neuromodulators such as Botox and Dysport actually have an identical active molecule, which is botulinum toxin A.  This molecule irreversibly binds to the end of the nerve and prevents the nerve from sending an impulse to the muscle to make it contract.  The nerve simply grows a new end plate and this is how the effect wears off.  Botox and Dysport, therefore, should have very similar longevities and in most patients this longevity is around three to four months.

I’ve heard that Dysport spreads further from the point of injection than Botox so fewer injections are needed.

Question: I’ve heard that Dysport spreads further from the point of injection than Botox so fewer injections are needed. Does this mean that you pay less overall with Dysport than Botox?

Answer: If Dysport does indeed diffuse more than Botox that does not necessarily mean that you need fewer injections or that a smaller amount of the product is needed.  Due to this fact, overall, Dysport is priced similar to Botox and the amount that is necessary would also be similar to the Botox alternative and, therefore, overall cost is similar.  The complexities of the difference between Botox and Dysport are many but, overall, they are very similar products.
