Will my fat transfer improve or can it be reversed?

Posted August 4, 2012 11:27 am by Dr. Andrew Campbell in Fat Injections,Fat Transfer

Question:
I had fat transfer a few days ago and I feel like the doctor really overfilled my cheeks and the folds around my nose. I look horribly swollen and piggish. Will this improve or is there some way to reverse what has been done?

Answer:
Considering you are only a few days out from the procedure, I would expect that this is quite normal in that we are not only going to have a bit of overcorrection due to the amount of fat that is injected, but since you are only a few days out you are essentially at the peak of swelling and the combination of the swelling and over-injection of fat can lead to a very overinflated appearance.  Over the next few days the majority of this swelling is going to subside and though you will still be slightly overfilled with the fat, you should have a relatively normal appearance and then over the next few months a percentage of this fat will resorb and long term you should have an excellent result.

Are fat injections a good way to plump up sunken, aged cheeks?

Question:
Are fat injections a good way to plump up sunken, aged cheeks?

Answer:
Fat injections are definitely an excellent way to plump up sunken cheeks, but in patients who require a significant amount of volumetric enhancement they may want to consider cheek implants since they are very consistent in the way that they can enhance and obviously with an implant the volume is 100% permanent.

Where can fat injections be used?

Question:
Where can fat injections be used?

Answer:
Fat injections can be used virtually anywhere where additional volume is desired.  Some areas certainly seem to do better than others in that the fat tends to survive better in some areas than others, but again any area of the face where one would desire more volume, fat can be grafted.

Can fat injections be used here or would I end up looking like Marlon Brando from the Godfather?

Question: The lower portion of my cheeks to the sides of my mouth have become quite sunken looking as I’ve gotten older. Can fat injections be used here or would I end up looking like Marlon Brando from the Godfather?

Answer: Fat injections can definitely be placed in the midcheek to give added volume where someone has a sunken appearance and as long as the fat is judicially applied, you will not get the appearance of Marlon Brando from The Godfather.  In fact, I would even say that it would be nearly impossible to overfill somebody with that much fat in that location in a single fat grafting session and that it would most likely take at least two fat grafting sessions spaced about six months apart to give enough volume long term that it could be detrimental.  I would, therefore, feel very comfortable going ahead and giving a relatively aggressive fat grafting session to areas that are sunken as the ultimate result should only be a nice volumetric enhancement and long term you should not have any overfilling of that area.
