How often are fillers used to improve scars?

Posted July 10, 2012 11:54 am by Dr. Andrew Campbell in Fillers,Scar Revision

Question:
How often are fillers used to improve scars?

Answer:
In certain instances fillers can definitely be used to improve scars depending on the specific scar and character.  If a patient has a depressed scar and this scar catches light and creates shadows, we can use filler to fill the depressed portion of the scar quite successfully and this immediately makes the scar much less conspicuous.

I like the idea of using fillers but I don’t want to look puffy, is this ever a problem?

Question:
I like the idea of using fillers to rejuvenate my face, but I don’t want to look puffy. Is this ever a problem?

Answer:
If injectable fillers are not placed properly then you can certainly end up getting a puffy look, but when they are injected by experienced providers you should just get a very natural appearing enhancement of your facial features without a look of too much volume.  The key is to place the product in areas that require additional volume and avoid areas where you do not need volume.  It is also very important to avoid overfilling areas like the lower eyelids since those can become puffy with too much filler.

I’ve heard of Kenalog injections for improving swelling after rhinoplasty. What are these? Are they safe and do they really work?

Question: I’ve heard of Kenalog injections for improving swelling after rhinoplasty. What are these? Are they safe and do they really work?

Answer:Kenalog allows the swelling to subside and, therefore, avoids this fibrosis and the unexpected outcome.  Overall, Kenalog injections, at least the dilute 10 mg per mL suspension, are extremely safe when performed in experienced hands.
