Is this ever true for browlift surgery?

Posted May 5, 2012 10:11 pm by Dr. Andrew Campbell in Blepharoplasty,Brow Lift,Eyelid Surgery,Forehead Lift

Question: I know eyelid surgery is sometimes performed for medical reasons if sagging upper eyelids interfered with vision. Is this ever true for browlift surgery?

Answer: Occasionally a patient will have such low-set brows that a standard blepharoplasty alone is not going to be able to completely improve their visual deficit.  In that case, a browlift in conjunction with the blepharoplasty may be covered by insurance though frequently it can be difficult to get the insurance company to pay for that treatment.

How will the scar be affected if I have brow lift surgery?

Question: I have a small but deep scar on my forehead from an accident as a child. How will the scar be affected if I have brow lift surgery? Will it become more noticeable?

Answer: More than likely the scar itself will in no way be affected and will still be present in a very similar fashion to what it was prior to the browlift.  I would discuss with your surgeon the consideration of a scar revision at the same time as a browlift so that you can not only get the aesthetic improvement  from the browlift but also aesthetically improve the scar as well.

My brows have gotten very droopy in recent years and I also have horrible horizontal lines on my forehead.

Question: My brows have gotten very droopy in recent years and I also have horrible horizontal lines on my forehead. If I get a forehead lift, will it improve both?

Answer: Yes, a forehead lift should not only improve droopiness to the brows since it is going to lift the brows, but it should also improve the lines across the forehead since those formed due to the fact that patients repetitively raise their brows creating those horizontal lines.  By lifting the brows to a more aesthetic position, the patient should have less of a reason to lift the brows and create those horizontal forehead lines and they should, therefore, improve over time.

I’m interested in getting a forehead lift but with a very demanding job I simply cannot take a whole lot of time off from work afterward.

Question: I’m interested in getting a forehead lift but with a very demanding job I simply cannot take a whole lot of time off from work afterward. How long realistically would I need for the bruising and swelling to fade?

Answer: Browlift recovery varies from patient to patient but, overall, I tell people they should be able to easily go back to work within a week after having an endoscopic browlift.  I have had patients who have told me they could go back to work the next day though I would say this is rather unusual, and it is also extremely unusual to have anyone who could not go back to work within that first week.

Besides browlift do other procedures address forehead concerns?

Posted January 6, 2012 12:18 pm by Dr. Andrew Campbell in Endoscopic Browlift,Forehead Lift

Question: I really dislike the appearance of my forehead. I could grow my bangs out but I’ve never looked good with bangs. I’d love to get a browlift but I feel like you don’t hear much about this procedure. Are there other procedures, like a facelift or Botox, that address the same problems but are better or more popular?

Answer: Botox can certainly be used for treatment of forehead lines, but a facelift or rhytidectomy really does not address the forehead.  Browlifts are a relatively common procedure for me to personally perform, and you may not hear much about them simply because most surgeons have been taught in the more traditional fashion of a coronal browlift where a very large incision is made across the top of the head in the hairline and once we describe this to patients they oftentimes decide they really do not want a browlift.  My personal preference and the technique that I use in virtually all my patient is some form of an endoscopic browlift where very small incisions are made between the hairs up in the scalp and, therefore, no large incisions are necessary.  I would have to evaluate your forehead and discuss the reasons behind why you do not like it before I would be able to give you a definitive treatment option, but endoscopic browlifts are very good at improving the overall appearance of the brows and forehead and they also allow me to remove the muscle between the brows that causes the deep creases in that area; furthermore, in select cases where a patient has an overly tall or large forehead, I can actually drop the hairline at the same time as the browlift by making a beveled, irregular incision along the hairline.  This heals extremely well and is very inconspicuous and overall patients are very happy with this technique.
