I had lip augmentation years ago and now I’d like to undergo lip reduction surgery.

Question:
I had lip augmentation years ago and now I’d like to undergo lip reduction surgery. My lips project out too much. Can this be fixed?

Answer:
Yes, you can undergo lip reduction surgery after you have undergone lip augmentation surgery in the past depending, of course, on what type of augmentation was performed.  If these were lip implants then the implants can simply be removed.  If this was fat grafting then you can undergo a surgical reduction of the lips to make them smaller.  Ultimately, this needs to be highly customized and so I would have to evaluate your specific lip anatomy to determine exactly what treatment would be best.

Do people ever get collagen injections any more for lip augmentation?

Posted September 1, 2012 3:51 pm by Dr. Andrew Campbell in Lip Augmentation

Question:
Do people ever get collagen injections any more for lip augmentation?

Answer:
Many injectors still feel that collagen is very useful for extremely fine lines in the lips, but for lip augmentation I would venture to guess there are very few people still using regular old collagen since the hyaluronic acid fillers will last a lot longer than the collagen did.

Is there a period of time after lip augmentation when the lips are swollen and doesn’t look like the final result?

Question:
Is there a period of time after lip augmentation when the lips are swollen and doesn’t look like the final result? If so, how long does this last for?

Answer:
Anytime we do virtually any treatment to the face we are going to create some swelling whether that be from Botox, which the swelling may only last for an hour or so, to fillers where the swelling could last for at most a few days.  Fat transfer or more invasive approaches can obviously create swelling that could last for weeks but regarding your question of lip augmentation I would expect the lips to go back down to their normal state within a few days after the injections and slightly faster if you ice the lips immediately afterwards.

Are implants the only way to get permanent lip augmentation?

Question:
Are implants the only way to get permanent lip augmentation?

Answer:
Implants are certainly the most consistent way to get permanent lip augmentation, but implants do come with risks and, therefore, are not ideal for everyone.  Other ways to permanently enhance the lips would be through fat injections though frequently you will need two separate sessions to give an adequate amount of volume without creating lumpiness or irregularities.  Other ways to create permanent lip enhancement would include silicone injection though I would highly recommend that you avoid this treatment since it is not FDA approved for facial augmentation and should a complication arise it can be very difficult to rectify.  Overall, at the time of this blog I really like the hyaluronic acid fillers for lip augmentation since they can be highly customized to create the lip that we desire.  They are incredibly safe.  They are easily reversible if necessary and they will last six to nine months.

Is it possible to get more of a pouty look with lip augmentation?

Posted July 27, 2012 2:12 pm by Dr. Andrew Campbell in Lip Augmentation

Question:
Is it possible to get more of a pouty look with lip augmentation?

Answer:
It is definitely possible to get a pouty look with lip augmentation, but it really depends on the size and shape of your current lips as to how many syringes it would take to create a truly pouty lip.  It is also very important to seek out an experienced injector since lip augmentation is a rather artistic treatment and we ultimately want you to look quite natural yet have a very nice enhancement.
