Are there any natural alternatives to cosmetic surgery for restoring a youthful appearance?

Posted October 5, 2010 11:15 am by Dr. Andrew Campbell in Quintessa Medical Spa

Question: Are there any natural alternatives to cosmetic surgery for restoring a youthful appearance?

Answer: Well, there are certainly many natural alternatives for facial rejuvenation but, in my personal opinion, they tend to provide extremely limited improvements compared with more aggressive alternatives such as laser treatments or surgery.  With that said, leading a healthy lifestyle of eating well, regular exercise, adequate hydration, and sun protection can go quite a long ways towards preservation of the patient’s facial appearance.  I would not necessarily say that the aforementioned lifestyle techniques will rejuvenate anyone but they certainly go a very long way in maintaining a youthful appearance.  Once someone has features of aging, I feel that they require some sort of an intervention such as Botox, fillers, lights or laser treatments, or the new nonsurgical facial rejuvenation device called Ultherapy, which is an ultrasound-based device that provides targeted treatment to the deeper layers of the face that creates new collagen deposition, which in turn then tightens and lifts the facial features.  Though it is subtle compared to a surgical procedure, it is very exciting that a nonsurgical, no-downtime technique can provide lifting of the facial structures.  In fact, Ultherapy is the very first device ever to be given a lift indication for facial rejuvenation by the FDA that is a nonsurgical, no-downtime technique.

What health tests are recommended before cosmetic surgery?

The answer to that question depends on your age and overall health.  An overall healthy young male under the age of 50 typically requires no testing other than a thorough history and physical, and this of course is dependant upon the surgical center or hospital where the procedure is going to be performed as they may have different regulations regarding testing that they require.  If a patient has a long history of various chronic medical illnesses, then they not only need a thorough history and physical by their primary care physician but they will require more extensive testing to assure that they can undergo a surgical procedure without undue risk.  Ultimately, I require all of my patients to see their primary care physician for a thorough history and physical to assure that they are healthy enough to undergo the planned surgical procedure as I personally feel that a history and physical performed by myself would not be nearly as adequate as one performed by a general practitioner that is more familiar with the patient and the patient’s past medical history.
