Reverse Signs of Facial Aging with a FaceLift
Drooping jowls, sagging facial skin, and wrinkles add years to your appearance. Facelift or rhytidectomy, commonly performed at Campbell Facial Plastic Surgery to help reverse the signs of aging and drastically improve the appearance of the face and jaw. During a facelift, Dr. Campbell uses advanced techniques to restore a more youthful appearance to the face without creating the traditional tell-tale signs of surgery. By elevating the tissue in a deeper plane than traditional facelifts, and paying particular attention to the muscles and fat under the chin, a more significant and more natural appearing rejuvenation occurs. Our facelift patients begin their surgery with a complimentary facial massage and aromatherapy at Paragon Surgical Center, our on-site outpatient surgery center. After surgery, patients return to their private room for a relaxing and pampering recovery. Mini-facelift patients are treated in the office setting using local anesthetic and return home immediately after the procedure.
Candidates for FaceLift
While most facelift patients are between the ages of 40 and 70, Dr. Campbell suggests that patients have a facelift at the first signs of aging while the facial tissue still has significant elasticity. This allows the results of a facelift to last longer.
During your facelift consultation, Dr. Campbell will examine your face, paying close attention to the degree of sagging, ,skin texture, elasticity, and overall facial esthetics. He will visualize the final result and discuss beneficial adjuvant treatments as well as any limitations of rejuvenation, if any. A plan will then be discussed on how best to achieve the desired results. Commonly, multiple different treatments will be combined to give the patient the rejuvenation of their dreams.
The Traditional FaceLift Procedure
Dr. Campbell does not perform the traditional facelift procedure. He feels that the direction of the lift is not natural, and too much tension is placed on the skin causing widened scars and pulled earlobes. He feels that traditional facelifting often leaves patients with an operated or unnatural appearance, and the longevity is limited.

During facelift surgery at our facility just north of Milwaukee, Dr. Campbell makes incisions in front of and behind the ears, and along the hairline. These type of incisions are made to prevent changes in the hairline, and to minimize any visible scars. Another incision is made under the chin and is used to tighten the underlying platysma facial muscle. The deeper layer of the face called the SMAS (superficial musculoaponeurotic system) is released from its attachments, then elevated and secured in a more aesthetically pleasing position. Due to the SMAS being released from the ligamentous attachments and secured in such a position, the lift can be performed in a very natural direction. If the SMAS is not separated from these ligaments, the lift is compromised and the direction of pull is limited. This lifting tension occurs on the deeper SMAS layer of the skin. This allows for extremely thin and inconspicuous scars. Furthermore, the lift is more upward, and less "sweeping" than a traditional facelift, allowing for a very natural appearance. This creates an impressive rejuvenation of the face, without creating a stretched or operated look. The facelift procedure typically takes several hours to complete.
Revision Facelifts are performed on patients who have previously undergone a facelift and are either unhappy with the results, or time has passed and they are ready for another. Dr. Campbell's advanced surgical techniques previously described, give him the ability to perform revision facelifts with the same degree of rejuvenation and natural appearance as his primary facelifts. He feels there is no other technique that can provide a natural look for revision facelift patients. In fact, his surgical techniques enable him to reverse some of the tell tale signs or "surgical look" of other previous less sophisticated procedures.
After the facelift, the double chin vanishes, the jowls disappear, and the lines in the cheek area are diminished, all adding to a more youthful appearance.
Recovery
Most of Dr. Campbell's facelift patients spend the night of their surgery in our Paragon Surgical Center where they receive individualized, one-on-one care from a private registered nurse. A spouse or significant other can even stay the night with the patient, sleeping in a custom pull-out single bed. Most patients will have a small drain behind the ear to remove excess fluid from under the skin. Thes drain is removed the following day. Pain medication and sleeping aids are provided to assure comfort during recovery. Any discomfort is typically minimal.
The majority of our facelift patients are up and about the day after surgery. Sutures are able to be removed six days after surgery. However, bruising and swelling may take up to two weeks to resolve. Makeup is commonly worn to hide bruising that may occur. Quintessa Medical Spa carries specialized make-up specifically designed to cover bruising, and our trained experts can advise you on the best camouflage techniques and which products to use
Results
Facelift results last a lifetime, but the face will continue to age. After 10 to 20 years, you may develop excess skin and facial laxity again. Also, a facelift only affects the lower portion of the face and does not address the eye, brow or forehead areas. Furthermore, it does not change the texture of the skin. However, other procedures may be combined with a facelift to accommodate these areas that have not yet been treated. To improve skin texture, a laser resurfacing procedure is frequently performed at the same setting. Other procedures, such as a browlift and eyelift may be combined with a facelift for a more complete treatment and overall improvement. This comprehensive approach to facial rejuvenation provides for a more harmonious effect, and prevents the facial disharmony some individual treatments can cause. Due to the harmonious effect comprehensive rejuvenation provides, Dr. Campbell prefers and most commonly performs this technique on his patients requesting facial rejuvenation.
Variations on the facelift procedure can be performed to correct specific areas of the face or to correct the undesirable results of a previous facelift surgery.
Mini FaceLift
For select patients who want a way to maintain a youthful look or to improve the look of their lower face, jowls, and laxity under the chin, a mini facelift may be the answer. A mini facelift, also referred to as the ˇ˝weekend or lunchtime facelift", Quicklift®, Lifestyle Lift®, S-lift, etc. is performed under local anesthesia and has a shorter recovery time than the traditional facelift. The procedure is similar to a traditional facelift, however, the procedure is much quicker and incisions are fewer and smaller for a mini facelift. Dr. Campbell can customize a mini facelift procedure for his patients to address select problem areas, such as early jowling and mild laxity under the chin.
Results of a mini facelift are not as long lasting or as dramatic as the results of a traditional facelift. However, a mini face lift is an excellent procedure for making quick, subtle changes that can help slow the aging process. The procedure is popular among younger patients because it can reduce the appearance of aging later in life, and help individuals to maintain a youthful appearance. Patients emerge from the procedure with a refreshed, youthful appearance, without looking like they have undergone surgery.
Revision Face Lift
Patients who are unhappy with the results of a face lift or have noticed the return of significant aging features after a previous face lift may want to consider a revision face lift. Patients are frequently referred to Dr. Campbell for his expertise in revision surgery by other doctors and surgeons throughout the Midwest and beyond.
It is important to wait at least six months following your initial face lift before considering a revision face lift procedure. It typically takes that long for all of the swelling to subside and healing to be complete. Subtle changes can continue suring this time period which can affect your opinion of your face lift results.
Revision face lift procedures are typically more difficult and complicated than the original face lift. The formation of tough scar tissue and relocation of facial skin can make the procedure more difficult. Therefore, the revision surgery typically takes longer to complete and is more costly than the original surgery. However, because Dr. Campbell performs his face lifts under the deeper layer of the face called the SMAS, and its ligamentous attachments are released, he is able to perform revision face lifts and correct many of the concerns that are the result of the original procedure. In fact, by performing revision face lifts in such a fashion, Dr. Campbell can correct the "swept" or operated look caused by previous traditional face lifting techniques. Ultimately, the revision face lift patient does not look "tighter" , they look more rejuvenated, more natural, and more vibrant!
During your consultation, Dr. Campbell will discuss your goals for surgery and your revision face lift options.

Mid Face Lift
A mid facelift addresses the mid-region of the face, targeting the areas of the cheek and under the eyes. The procedure is an excellent choice for patients who don't need to address laxity of the neck but are still interested in facial rejuvenation for the cheeks and lower eyelids. The mid facelift elevates these soft tissues up over the bony prominence of the cheek, giving the appearance of fuller cheeks. This gives the patient a much more harmonious facial appearance.
During a mid facelift at our practice north of Milwaukee, Dr. Campbell makes small incisions in the hair of the temple. Endoscopes are then used under the tissue to release and then elevate. Frequently, a small incision is made inside the mouth to aid in adequate elevation. No incisions are made on the facial skin, and therefore, no visible scars exist. The mid face is not as invasive as a full facelift. Since the procedure is less invasive, the recovery time is generally shorter and the results are noticeable immediately.
The mid facelift is appropriate for younger patients who are beginning to notice the first tell-tale signs of aging in the mid-face region. The procedure can restore a smooth, youthful look to the cheeks and eyelids so that patients appear less tired and more refreshed. A mid facelift is frequently performed in conjunction with an endoscopic browlift so that the brows and midface are both treated as a combined unit and rejuvenation is more complete and more natural appearing.
If you have any questions about the results that can be obtained with a mid facelift, Dr. Andrew Campbell will be happy to describe the individual benefits you are likely to achieve with the procedure.
