Reverse Signs of Facial Aging: Mini/Mid Face Lift, Revision Face Lift, Fat Grafting, and BOTOX® Therapy Near Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Drooping jowls, sagging facial skin, and wrinkles add years to your appearance. Face lift or rhytidectomy, is commonly performed at Campbell Facial Plastic Surgery to help reverse the signs of aging and drastically improve the appearance of the face and jaw. During a face lift, Dr. Campbell uses advanced techniques to restore a more youthful appearance to the face without creating the traditional tell-tale signs of surgery. Our face lift patients begin their surgery with a complimentary facial massage and aromatherapy at Paragon Surgical Center, our on-site outpatient surgery center. After surgery, patients return to their private room for a relaxing and pampering recovery.

We also offer non-surgical alternatives such as fat grafting and BOTOX® Cosmetic at our practice, just north of Milwaukee.

Candidates for Face Lift

While most face lift patients are between the ages of 40 and 70, Dr. Campbell suggests that patients have a face lift at the first signs of aging while the facial tissue still has significant elasticity. This allows the results of a face lift to last longer.

During your face lift consultation, Dr. Campbell will examine your face, paying close attention to the degree of sagging and skin texture and elasticity. A plan will then be discussed on how best to achieve the result desired. Commonly, multiple different treatments will be combined to give the patient the rejuvenation of their dreams.

The Traditional Face Lift Procedure

Dr. Campbell does not perform the traditional face lift procedure. He feels that the direction of the lift is not natural, and too much tension is placed on the skin causing widened scars and pulled earlobes. He feels that traditional face lifting often leaves patients with an operated or unnatural appearance, and the longevity is limited.

During face lift surgery at our facility just north of Milwaukee, Dr. Campbell makes incisions in front of and behind the ears, and along the hairline to prevent changes in the hairline, and minimize any visible scars. Another incision is made under the chin and is used to tighten the underlying platysma facial muscle. The deeper layer of the face called the SMAS is released from it's attachments, then elevated and secured in a more esthetically pleasing position. Because the SMAS is released from the ligamentous attachments, the lift can be performed in a very natural direction opposite the effects of aging. If the SMAS is not separated from these ligaments, the lift is compromised and the direction of pull is limited. Because the lifting tension is on the deeper SMAS layer, tension on the skin is minimized allowing for extremely thin, inconspicuous scars. Furthermore, the lift is more upward, and less “sweeping” than a traditional face lift allowing for a very natural-appearing appearance. This creates an impressive rejuvenation of the face, without creating a stretched or operated look. The face lift procedure typically takes several hours to complete.

Because Dr. Campbell performs his face lift procedure in the advanced fashion previously described, his ability to perform revision face lifts with the same degree of rejuvenation and natural appearance is maintained. He feels there is no other technique that can provide a natural look to revision face lift patients.

After the face lift, the double chin vanishes, the jowls disappear, and the lines in the cheek area are diminished, all adding to a more youthful appearance.

Recovery Following Face Lift

Following a face lift, most of Dr. Campbell's Milwaukee and Sheboygan area patients spend the night of their surgery in our Paragon Surgical Center where they receive individualized, one-on-one care from a registered nurse. A spouse or significant other can even stay the night with the patient, sleeping in a custom pull-out single bed. Most patients will have a small drain behind each ear to remove excess fluid from under the skin. These drains are removed the following day. Pain medication and sleeping aids are provided to assure comfort during recovery. Any discomfort is typically minimal.

The majority of our face lift patients are up and about within a couple of days. However, bruising and swelling may take up to two weeks to resolve. Skin staples and sutures are removed within a week of the surgery. Makeup is commonly worn to help hide any bruising. Our trained experts at Quintessa Medical Spa can advise you on the best camouflage techniques and makeup products to use.

Face Lift Results

Face lift results last a lifetime, but the face will continue to age. After 10 to 20 years, you may develop excess skin and facial laxity again. Also, a face lift only affects the lower portion of the face and does not address the eye, brow or forehead areas. Furthermore, it does not change the texture of the skin. However, other procedures may be combined with a face lift. To improve skin texture, a laser resurfacing procedure is frequently performed at the same setting. Other procedures, such as a forehead / brow lift and / or eyelift may be combined with a face lift for a more complete treatment and overall improvement. This comprehensive approach to facial rejuvenation provides for a more harmonious effect, and prevents the facial disharmony some individual treatments can cause.

Variations on the face lift procedure can be performed to correct specific areas of the face or to correct the undesirable results of a previous face lift surgery.

Mini Face Lift

For select patients who want a way to maintain a youthful look or to improve the look of a certain area of the face, a mini face lift may be the answer. A mini face lift, also referred to as the “weekend face lift," is performed under local anesthesia and has a shorter recovery time than the traditional face lift. The procedure is similar to a traditional face lift, however, the procedure is much quicker and incisions are fewer and smaller for a mini face lift. Dr. Campbell can customize a mini face lift for his Milwaukee and Sheboygan area patients to address select problem areas, such as early jowling and mild laxity under the chin.

Results of a mini face lift are not as long lasting or as dramatic as the results of a traditional face lift, however, a mini face lift is an excellent procedure for making quick, subtle changes that can help slow the aging process. The procedure is popular among younger patients because it can reduce the appearance of aging later in life, and help individuals to maintain a youthful appearance.

A mini face lift is also excellent for Milwaukee and Sheboygan area patients who want to improve specific areas of the face. Patients emerge from surgery with a refreshed, youthful appearance, without looking like they have undergone surgery.

Revision Face Lift

Patients who are unhappy with the results of a face lift or have noticed the return of significant aging features after a previous face lift may want to consider a revision face lift. Wisconsin patients are frequently referred to Dr. Campbell for his expertise in revision surgery by other doctors and surgeons throughout the Midwest.

It is important to wait at least six months following your initial face lift before considering a revision face lift procedure. It typically takes that long for all of the swelling to subside and healing to be complete. Subtle changes continue through the six months following a face lift, which can affect your opinion of your face lift results.

Revision face lift procedures are typically more difficult and complicated than the original face lift. The formation of tough scar tissue and relocation of facial skin can make the procedure more difficult. Therefore, the revision surgery typically takes longer to complete and is more costly than the original surgery. However, because Dr. Campbell performs his face lifts on the deeper layer of the face called the SMAS, and it’s ligamentous attachments are released, he is able to perform revision face lifts and correct many of the concerns that come with such a procedure. In fact, by performing revision face lifts in such a fashion, Dr. Campbell can correct the “swept” or operated look caused by previous traditional face lifting techniques. Ultimately, the revision face lift patient does not look “tighter”, they look more rejuvenated, more natural, and more vibrant!

During your consultation, Dr. Campbell will discuss your goals for surgery and your revision face lift options.

Dr. Campbell is highly experienced in performing revision face lifts for patients in Wisconsin and throughout the Midwest. To schedule a revision Face lift consultation, contact us today.

Mid Face Lift

A mid face lift addresses the mid-region of the face, targeting the areas around the nose, under the eyes, and above the mouth. The procedure is an excellent choice for patients who don't need to address laxity of the neck but are still interested in facial rejuvenation for the cheeks and lower eyelids. The mid face lift elevates these soft tissues up over the bony prominence of the cheek, giving the appearance of fuller cheeks. This gives the patent a much more harmonious facial appearance.

During a mid face lift at our practice north of Milwaukee, Dr. Campbell makes small incisions in the hair of the temple. Endoscopes are then used under the tissue to release and then elevate. Frequently a small incision is made inside the mouth to aid in adequate elevation. Because the mid face lift is not as invasive as a full face lift, its recovery time is generally shorter and results are noticeable immediately. No incisions are made on the facial skin, and therefore, no visible scars exist.

The mid face lift is appropriate for younger patients who are beginning to notice the first tell-tale signs of aging in the mid-face region. The procedure can restore a smooth, youthful look to the cheeks and eyelids so that patients appear less tired and more refreshed.

If you have any questions about the results that can be obtained with a mid face lift, Dr. Andrew Campbell will be happy to describe the individual benefits you are likely to achieve with the procedure. Please contact Campbell Facial Plastic Surgery to schedule a mid face lift consultation at our office near Milwaukee.

BOTOX® Cosmetic – a Non-Surgical Alternative to Face Lift

For a less invasive treatment to minimize the signs of aging, injections of BOTOX® Cosmetic (botulinum toxin) are available at our Milwaukee and Sheboygan area facility, BOTOX® Cosmetic is injected into the facial muscles that cause wrinkles, temporarily weakening them and minimizing the appearance of the wrinkle caused by the targeted muscle. Common areas where wrinkles appear, such as the “frown lines” between the eyes and “crow’s feet” along the sides of the eyes, are treated with the injections. Dr. Campbell can administer BOTOX® Cosmetic injections in the office just north of Milwaukee. There is no recovery time with BOTOX® Cosmetic, and wrinkles and lines begin to fade within one to three days following treatment. Injections may be repeated every three to six months to maintain the results.

BOTOX® Cosmetic can be an excellent choice for those who want instant results but are not ready to undergo a surgical procedure. Furthermore, by placing BOTOX® in specific muscles of the face, the appearance of a brow lift can be achieved.

Fat Grafting

Although excess fat may be undesirable on other locations of the body, it actually can greatly enhance facial appearance. Young people have facial fat deposits that contribute to their smooth complexion and youthful glow. Sunken under-eye areas and hollowed-out cheeks are among the first visible signs of aging, and are often caused by shrinking fat deposits. After fat is transferred to these areas through fat grafting, they can appear voluminous and youthful once again. Another advantage of full, shapely facial contours is that wrinkles and lines are smoothed over. Think of a small party balloon. When it’s empty it looks shriveled and wrinkled, but when it’s full it appears smooth and vibrant.

Fat grafting involves transferring one’s own fat cells to the targeted areas on the face. As an added bonus of the fat grafting procedure at our practice near Milwaukee, liposuction is performed to remove unwanted fat deposits from the abdomen, thighs, or buttocks. After a thorough cleansing and purification process, these previously undesirable fat cells can be used to achieve striking results with facial fat sculpting.

Fat grafting is safe and its effects are long-lasting. Contact our Milwaukee-area practice to learn more about the advantages and benefits of this facial rejuvenation procedure.
