Facial Reconstruction Candidates
Unlike other types of facial plastic surgery, which are elective and cosmetic in nature, reconstructive surgery may be viewed as a necessity to restore or create a natural appearance. Congenital defects, and damage caused by facial trauma and skin diseases can be corrected with facial reconstruction performed by Dr. Campbell at his Wisconsin practice.
Personal Facial Reconstruction Consultation
During a personal reconstructive surgery consultation with Dr. Campbell, he will examine the area of your face in need of reconstruction to determine the best techniques for treatment. Further testing, such as CT scans, may be necessary before the final plan can be made. Dr. Campbell will create a treatment plan and illustrate the possible postoperative outcome to help you make decisions about your reconstructive surgery.
The Facial Reconstruction Procedure
Techniques and types of surgery vary depending on the area treated and degree of facial reconstruction needed. Dr. Campbell strives to keep up with new advancements in facial reconstruction for his patients in the Milwaukee and Sheboygan, Wisconsin area. With his training and experience in reconstructive surgery, Dr. Campbell can reconstruct even large disfiguring facial defects so that they are almost undetectable to the untrained eye.
Skin Cancer Removal
The most common type of reconstructive surgery performed at Campbell Facial Plastic Surgery in Wisconsin is the correction of defects after skin cancer removal. The skin cancer is first removed by Dr. Aloys Tauscheck, dermatologist, or other area surgeon specially trained in Mohs micrographic surgery – an effective technique for removing skin cancers while reducing the chances that the cancer will return. Mohs surgery leaves an unsightly defect that typically requires a complex closure. Depending on the area and type of reconstruction needed, the procedure may include the use of skin or cartilage grafts, local skin flaps, and/or regional muscle/skin flaps.
Ear (Auricular) Reconstruction
Dr. Campbell can also perform ear (auricular) reconstruction. To create an entirely new ear, rib cartilage is harvested to make the framework, and tissue from the temple area is used for a for covering. A skin graft from the leg is then used to cover the new ear. This type of ear reconstruction surgery requires several stages and may take many months to complete, but can be invaluable for those who have lost an ear due to injury or who were born without an external ear structure.
Recovery Following Facial Reconstruction
Recovery varies greatly depending on the area treated and the amount of reconstructive surgery performed. Swelling and bruising are common following surgery and typically heal within two weeks. Sutures are generally removed five to seven days after the surgery. Any scars that result from the procedure will become less noticeable over time.
Facial Reconstruction Results
Results of facial reconstruction vary depending on the type and extent of reconstruction performed. Improved appearance is typically noticeable immediately following surgery and results last a lifetime.
