Rhinoplasty Candidates
Rhinoplasty (nose surgery) is commonly performed at Campbell Facial Plastic Surgery just north of Milwaukee for cosmetic reasons such as decreasing or increasing the nose size, altering the tip or bridge, or changing the shape of the nostrils. In addition, Dr. Campbell can correct structural defects in the nose that cause breathing problems, revise birth defects, and correct problems caused by injury.
There is no age requirement for rhinoplasty since it can be performed for cosmetic and medical reasons. Dr. Campbell typically has young patients wait until their nose has completely developed around age 14 or 15 before performing rhinoplasty.
Personal Rhinoplasty Consultation
Before rhinoplasty surgery, Dr. Campbell will discuss with you your nasal history and perform a thorough examination of your external and internal nasal anatomy in order to create a plan for the reshaping of the problem areas of your nose. With digital imaging, Dr. Campbell can show you the possible postoperative outcome and address any concerns you may have. Dr. Campbell feels that it is imperative that his patients go through computer imaging so that they can get a feel for what their nose will look like after surgery. This will prevent the possibility of an unexpected appearance and will confirm reasonable expectations.
The Rhinoplasty Nose Surgery Procedure
The outpatient rhinoplasty procedure typically lasts from one to two hours at our Paragon Surgical Center just north of Milwaukee. During surgery, incisions are made inside the nose or across the skin that separates the nostrils (columella) in order to expose the internal cartilage and bone. Cartilage and bone are removed, repositioned, added, and sculpted to create the look you desire. Frequently, a portion of bone and cartilage is removed from the bridge to remove a nasal “hump,” and sutures are often used to create a thinner, more aesthetically pleasing nasal tip.
Recovery Following Rhinoplasty
After rhinoplasty surgery a thin plastic and metal splint is placed over the bridge of the nose and left on for three to five days. Unlike other surgeons, Dr. Campbell leaves no packing in the nose during recovery, allowing you to breathe through your nose, creating a significantly more comfortable postoperative period.
Rhinoplasty patients at Campbell Facial Plastic Surgery, just north of Milwaukee, are typically able to return to their normal routine a week after surgery. For the first day following rhinoplasty surgery, it is important to keep your head elevated to reduce any discomfort you may feel. Some bleeding is common, and you may experience a dull headache. A small amount of yellow-brown bruising may occur under the eyes, which usually subsides within a week. Sutures placed on the outside of the nose are removed within four to six days, while those on the inside of the nose dissolve.
Any swelling of the face typically subsides within a few days, but residual swelling in the nose may exist for several months, especially at the tip of the nose. For this reason, final results may not be visible for six months to a year. The improved appearance of the nose by rhinoplasty is permanent and scarring is generally minimal.

Revision Rhinoplasty Surgery
Many of Dr. Campbell’s patients are referred to him by medical colleagues who are familiar with his skill in revision rhinoplasty, performed to correct a previous nose surgery which resulted in an undesired look, or breathing difficulty. Dr. Campbell is highly experienced in performing revision rhinoplasty procedures at his Wisconsin practice, and has corrected the noses of many patients throughout the Midwest.
It is important to wait at least a year after your original nose surgery before considering a revision rhinoplasty. In some cases, swelling in the nose can persist for beyond a few months and the final results may not be visible for up to a year. Once the swelling resolves, all abnormalities can be appreciated and a plan can then be made to resolve any concerns regarding your appearance or breathing.
