Rhinoplasty and Revision Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty and Revision Rhinoplasty – Nose Surgery – is an effective way to bring balance to the face. Rhinoplasty, or nose surgery, can reshape and resize the nose to a more aesthetically pleasing look. It is important to choose a facial plastic surgeon who is experienced because nose surgery is one of the most complicated forms of facial plastic surgery. Patients come to Dr. Andrew Campbell for his expert skill and delicate hand. Dr. Campbell is also highly skilled at performing revision rhinoplasty surgery for those who are unhappy with the outcome of a previous rhinoplasty.

Rhinoplasty Candidates

The nose is visually the most prominent feature on our face, and functionally, we need to be able to breath through it. Yet esthetically, we are supposed to ignore the nose and concentrate on other desirable features of the face such as brilliant, youthful eyes. A nose can not make someone more beautiful, but it can certainly detract from a person’s appearance. Many patients therefore seek a change to their nasal appearance. Rhinoplasty or nose surgery is commonly performed at Campbell Facial Plastic Surgery. Patients seek Dr. Campbell out for cosmetic reasons such as decreasing or increasing the nose size, altering the tip or bridge, or changing the shape of the nostrils. In addition, Dr. Campbell also provides functional rhinoplasty to correct structural defects in the nose that cause breathing problems, revise birth defects, and correct problems caused by injury.

There is no age requirement for rhinoplasty since it can be performed for cosmetic and medical reasons, but Dr. Campbell typically has young patients wait until their nose has completely developed around age 14 or 15 for girls and age 17 to 18 for boys before performing rhinoplasty.

Personal Rhinoplasty Consultation

Before rhinoplasty surgery, Dr. Campbell will discuss with you your nasal history and perform a thorough examination of your external and internal nasal anatomy in order to create a plan for the reshaping of the problem areas of your nose. With digital imaging, Dr. Campbell can show you the possible postoperative outcome and address any concerns you may have. Dr. Campbell feels that it is imperative that his patients go through computer imaging so that they can get a feel for what their nose will look like after surgery. This will prevent the possibility of an unexpected appearance and will confirm reasonable expectations.

The Rhinoplasty Nose Surgery Procedure

The outpatient rhinoplasty procedure typically takes one to two hours and is performed at the surgical center just north of Milwaukee. During surgery, incisions are made inside the nose or across the skin that separates the nostrils (columella) in order to expose the internal cartilage and bone. Cartilage and bone are removed, repositioned, added, and sculpted to create the look you desire. Frequently, a portion of bone and cartilage is removed from the bridge to remove a nasal “hump,” and sutures are often used to create a thinner, more aesthetically pleasing nasal tip.

Recovery Following Rhinoplasty

After rhinoplasty surgery, a thin plastic and metal splint is placed over the bridge of the nose and left on for six days. Unlike other surgeons, Dr. Campbell leaves no packing in the nose during recovery. This allows you to breathe through your nose and have a significantly more comfortable postoperative recovery period. Patients can go home the same day as surgery but need a responsible adult to drive them home.

Rhinoplasty patients at Campbell Facial Plastic Surgery are typically able to return to their normal routine a week after surgery. Following rhinoplasty surgery, it is important to keep your head elevated to minimize swelling and maintain nasal breathing. Some mild bleeding is common during the first 24 to 48 hours, and you may experience a dull headache, but true pain is typically minimal. A small amount of bruising may occur under the eyes, which almost always subsides within a week. If used, sutures placed on the outside of the nose are removed in six days, while those on the inside of the nose dissolve.

The majority of swelling typically subsides within the first few weeks, but residual mild swelling in the nose may exist for several months, especially at the tip of the nose. For this reason, final results may not be visible for six months to a year. However, the majority of the improvement is noticeable as soon as the splint is removed. The results of a rhinoplasty are permanent and scarring is generally minimal.

Revision Rhinoplasty Surgery

Many of Dr. Campbell’s patients are referred to him by medical colleagues who are familiar with his skill in revision rhinoplasty. This procedure is performed to correct a previous nose surgery which resulted in an undesired appearance, or breathing difficulties. Dr. Campbell is highly experienced in performing revision rhinoplasty procedures at his Wisconsin practice.

It is important to wait at least a year after your original nose surgery before a revision rhinoplasty can be performed, but Dr. Campbell is happy to evaluate a potential revision rhinoplasty candidate any time during their healing phase. In some cases, swelling in the nose can persist for beyond a few months and the final results may not be visible for up to a year. Once the swelling resolves, all abnormalities can be appreciated and a plan can then be made to resolve any concerns regarding your appearance or breathing.

If you are unhappy with a previous nasal surgery, please contact Dr. Campbell for a free consultation on a revision rhinoplasty procedure. He has helped many patients throughout the Midwest and USA by creating the nose the patient truly desires.
