Restore Your Skin to its Youthful Glow Using a Chemical Peel
Skin resurfacing can reduce the effects of aging and sun exposure to reveal your healthy, youthful skin. Skin resurfacing techniques such as chemical peels, laser resurfacing, and microdermabrasion are also performed at our Quintessa Medical Spa to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, scars and skin discolorations.
Personal Consultation
During a preliminary consultation, Dr. Campbell may use an ultraviolet lamp to detect pigmentation problems in the skin and a pre-peel cream will be prescribed to prepare the skin for the peel process. Light to Medium-depth peels are typically performed in the office, while full face deep peels are performed in the operating room. Dr. Campbell prefers the precision his Erbium laser provides and therefore, seldom performs chemical peels any longer. The laser peels provide more significant improvement in the skin, are overall safer, and have fewer side effects than chemicals. With the newer Pro-fractional laser by Sciton, significant wrinkle reduction can be achieved without having to go to the operating room!
What is a Chemical Peel
A peel is anything that causes the upper layers of the skin to be injured or slough. There are three main types of peels. The first type of peel is the light peel. The light peel is most commonly performed with the Erbium laser (a microlaser peel) or by using alpha-hydroxy acids. These are naturally occurring acids found¨ in fruits and other foods. Light peels have proven to be effective in treating dry skin, acne, liver or sun spots, diminishing fine facial wrinkles, decreasing pore size, and improving skin texture. They are usually performed in a series of six to eight peels, each peel two or three weeks apart. This type of peel leaves the skin with a red glow that only lasts for a day or so.

Medium depth peels are usually performed with the Erbium laser (microlaser peel) in conjuction with a Profractional laser peel. Trichloroacetic acid with or without Jessner's solution can also cause a medium depth peel, but with the newer lasers, Dr. Campbell no longer performs these peels due to the risk of scarring or pigmentation. Medium depth laser peels are typically performed in a series of three, once every month or so, however, significant improvements can be noted after the first peel. Medium peels have the same benefits as light peels and in addition remove larger wrinkles and precancerous skin lesions because of deeper penetration. The draw back is that a medium laser peel makes the skin on the face look like a sunburn for two to three days. A person having a medium peel must stay out of the sun for three days to recover from the procedure. Sun block can then be worn to protect the skin.
Deep peels can get rid of large wrinkles and can have results as dramatic as a face-lift. Phenol peels are considered deep peels and require 1-2 weeks to heal. They leave the skin red and sensitive for several months. Phenol also bleaches the skin and leaves the face lighter in color. Fortunately, Dr. Campbell can perform a deep laser peel with the Erbium laser. This type of laser peel is typically performed in the operating room, though if only a region of the face is being treated, it can be performed in the spa setting with a local anesthetic block. Campbell Facial Plastic Surgery and Quintessa Medical Spa have refined the post-peel recovery, and thus patients are typically healed in 6 days or less. Redness is minimal with the skin looking only slightly pink. This can be treated with Broad Band Light. Complete improvement is noted by 1-2 months. Wrinkle reduction is typically drastic, with most wrinkles completely gone, and all wrinkles significantly improved. Fortunately, the natural texture of the skin is maintained, complications are extremely rare, and patient satisfaction is extremely high. This type of peel can also be used to treat sever acne scarring.
How Will a Chemical Peel Help My Skin
Chemicals are placed on the skin, depending on the severity of the condition, causing the superficial layers of skin to "peel" off at various depths, allowing new skin to be revealed and heal. Better results are achieved with deeper peels, however, the deeper the peel, the longer the skin will take to heal. Ultimately, after your skin has healed, your face will have a more youthful, healthy glow with more even pigmentation and fewer wrinkles.
Recovery and results from a laser skin resurfacing
Your skin will feel swollen and tight immediately after the peel and you may experience a warm, tingling sensation. Depending on the depth of the peel, recovery can take from a day up to 6 days. Pinkness can last from a few days to months, but eventually disappears. Our trained experts at Quintessa Medical Spa in Sheboygan can advise you on the best makeup techniques and products to use to cover any pinkness that is still present after your skin has healed. Furthermore, broad band light can be used in the first few days after the peel to make the pinkness resolve faster.
